Transportation Tuesday: Tom Vanderbilt and Traffic

So while I was traveling to and from New York last week I finally had time to read a great book that I got for Christmas.... Traffic by Tom Vanderbilt. The book is really interesting -- it touches on traffic science, sociology, human behavior and culture. It was great, because anyone who has even driven a car can instantly relate to it.

It turns out the Tom Vanderbilt also maintains a companion blog to the book called How We Drive. You can check it out here.

Finally, test your knowledge about traffic with this cool interactive quiz from the New York Times and written by Tom Vanderbilt and read the NY Times review of Traffic here.

Transportation Tuesday: Rides a Bike Tumblr

This is a neat tumblr that I stumbled across showing celebrities riding bikes! It's a neat way to inspire others that it's cool to use alternative transportation. Most of the photographs appear to be vintage... I'm not sure if that is the conscious decision of the author or maybe just a sign of the times?

PS- Isn't Shirley Temple cute??

Transportation Tuesday: 'Horsey' Bike

When I was little, I really wanted a horse. Like really really really wanted a horse (this phase lasted for several years). This horse by artist eungi kim seems perfect-- you can still ride it, it's a practical means to get to work, an yet you don't have to stable it or feed it!

The "horsey" attachment was created for the seoul cycle design competition, which was organized by designboom in collaboration with the seoul design foundation. For more inspired bicycle design ideas, check out the rest of the winners here.

Recycled Road Sign Art

Artist Boris Bally, a talented metalsmith, has a really cool transit series where he makes art out of old road signs. My favorite pieces are these tables and these coasters. For those of you already thinking about decorating for the holidays, this wreath may be right up your alley!

Transportation Tuesday: Write a Bike

How cool are these bike prints? It doesn't look like the artist is selling prints online yet, but I hope that that will change in the future!
